VMware renewal approaching? Review the options before the next commitment

Do not treat the next VMware term as a licensing-only decision. We assess the renewal, physical-core position, workloads, infrastructure lifecycle and migration effort together, then help deliver the chosen path.

Your VMware renewal decision
VMware positionWhat is being renewed, the physical-core requirement and whether VMware still fits
Infrastructure lifecycleHow much useful life remains in the hardware carrying the estate
Workload placementWhich workloads genuinely need the current platform and which do not
Migration and recoveryWhat change would involve, how coexistence works and how rollback is protected
Know what is being licensed

Count the physical cores before comparing the quote

Broadcom’s published capacity guidance for VMware Cloud Foundation and VMware vSphere Foundation licenses the physical cores across the ESXi hosts, with a minimum of 16 cores per physical CPU.

That matters because moving or deleting virtual machines does not automatically reduce the licence requirement. A smaller VMware footprint only changes the commercial position when it changes the licensed host or core requirement, or the applicable product and arrangement.

Before comparing renewal with migration, establish
  • Hosts in scope
  • Physical CPUs and cores
  • The quoted VMware product
  • Storage entitlement and any additional requirement
  • Subscription term and support
  • Workloads that genuinely need to remain on VMware

The practical choices

Three useful responses to the next VMware commitment

01 · Renew deliberatelyKeep VMware where it continues to fit

Confirm the physical-core requirement, product, term and support. Compare the renewal with the infrastructure and operating cost over the period you actually intend to keep it.

02 · Renew and stage the transitionUse another term to create a controlled exit window

Decide what will move, build the destination, prove backup and recovery, then migrate in stages. Plan and budget for the period when two platforms may need to coexist.

03 · Change platformMove when the workload and commercial case support it

Compare the realistic destinations against the same workloads, recovery target and operating period. Azure Local, Hyper-V, Nutanix, Azure services and other options solve different problems. The destination follows the requirements.

Azure VMware Solution is still VMware

Azure VMware Solution changes where the VMware environment runs. It does not remove the VMware commercial relationship.

Microsoft’s current guidance describes the move to portable VMware Cloud Foundation licensing for AVS as licence-included SKUs are retired. Compare the VMware subscription and Azure infrastructure charges together, and be clear whether AVS is the destination or a transition bridge.

Timing matters

Align the renewal with the infrastructure lifecycle

Two clocks run underneath this decision and they are rarely in step.

Renewal first. The hardware may still have useful life. Renewing can preserve it while the transition is planned.

Refresh first. Settle the platform direction before buying the next hardware. Infrastructure refresh →

Both together. The strongest point to decide licensing, hardware, placement and recovery as one investment.

VMware decision in practice

PPK used the renewal point to make a platform decision

3node VMware estate
20+virtual server workloads
6landing paths assessed
~30days to migrate

Azure Local preserved local performance and control, fitted PPK’s Microsoft environment and provided a supported path away from VMware. Backup and recovery were aligned to the new platform, which then moved into ongoing support.

Start with the numbers you already have

Bring the renewal quote and the estate behind it

You do not need a completed migration strategy before talking to us.

Useful starting information
  • VMware renewal quote and expiry date
  • Hosts, processors and physical-core counts
  • Current hardware and support position
  • Workload and application summary
  • Backup and recovery requirements
  • Any known reason to keep workloads local or move them elsewhere

We can then establish whether the next step is a deliberate renewal, a staged transition or a platform change.

Common questions

Questions about VMware renewal and alternatives

When does renewing VMware make sense?

Renew when the platform still fits the applications and operating model, the infrastructure has useful runway and the quoted commitment represents value over the intended period. Renewal can also make sense when it creates the time needed for a controlled transition.

Does moving VMs reduce VMware licensing?

Not automatically. For VCF and VVF, the published capacity model is based on physical cores across the licensed hosts. A smaller VM count only changes the licensing position when the host or core requirement or commercial arrangement changes.

Can we renew now and move later?

Yes, where the available term supports the plan. A staged transition should include the destination build, migration sequence, coexistence period, acceptance testing and the point at which the VMware environment can be reduced or retired.

Is Azure VMware Solution a VMware exit?

No. AVS runs VMware in Azure. It can be useful for a data-centre move or transition, but the VMware licensing relationship remains part of the design and cost.

Which VMware alternative is best?

There is no universal replacement. Azure Local, Hyper-V, Nutanix, Azure services and other platforms suit different workloads and operating models. Compare the applications, recovery requirements, support, skills and total cost before choosing the destination.

Can you deliver the migration?

Yes. We assess the workloads, design the target, source the technology, run the migration and support what comes after.
